Outdoor Classroom/Community Walks Leader:

A knowledgeable friendly talker. To lead and/or assist with community walks and outdoor classrooms with various grade levels. Will require the ability to attend outdoor classrooms at schools during the daytime.

Areas of knowledge would include some of: The outdoor classrooms are conducted on a schedule of once a week events at each school over a period of 8-10 weeks at various locations across the watershed. Typical class room walks involve 2-4 hours of commitment, and repeating a short walk with up to 3 or 4 class of up to 30 students grades 1-12. Higher class levels require a more intimate knowledge of the subject at hand.
Outdoor classroom walks are intended to be active, interesting and as hands on as possible. We dig holes to look at soil, we measure water flow and temperature. We collect leaves for Tree identification. Tree planting, garbage clean-ups and other events are worked into the schedules between weekly educational walks.
The Community walks are usually one-of-events, often co-hosted with another environmental group (LEAF, Lost-Rivers). Duration is usually 2-3 hours and attendance can be as high as 100 individuals.
Please note: to participate in our work with school groups BCCP policies call for a voluntary Police Background Check.

Environmental Activities Support Volunteer

The BCCP conducts a variety of environmental activities with local communities. The BCCP maintains supply of resources including shovels, rakes, buckets and other tools. Each event also has a supply of resources such as trees, soils, plants etc. For each event these tools and supplies need to be collected and delivered to the site. Following the activities, the equipment requires collection, cleaning, possibly repairs and finally storage. On-site support volunteers assist to keep track of activities, materials and tools. Activity participants often require additional instruction and assistance to undertake the actvities. Our support volunteers also conduct smaller scale projects that are not otherwise open to general public participation.

Media: Newsletter, Website Publication

The lifeblood of the BCCP is the community participants who attend each event. The BCCP periodically published and distributes a newsletter (35 issues in 26 years). The BCCP also maintains a website at www.bccp.ca. Our website has an email response account for interested public to contact the BCCP. Periodic mailings concerning major events notices are also sent out to a regular mailing list of individuals and associations. A Media Volunteer would assist to maintain these resources, develop them at need and assist in dissemination of public information.

Organization Representatives

The BCCP often becomes involved with City, Regional and/or TRCA planning initiatives. Representatives are required to promote and present environmental issues on behalf of the BCCP and the local community.

Current and Recent activities have included: The BCCP coordinates activities and events with numerous community groups and schools. Representatives that could attend various other NGPO meetings and provide updates on BCCP activities would be of great assistance. The BCCP also attends several public information sessions annually and presents displays of posters and brochures and talks with the general public.

Board of Directors and Officers of the Corporation

The BCCP is a registered charitable organization and as such is governed by a 5 member Board of Directors. The executive positions are the president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. Members of the board and the executive must be members of the BCCP and knowlegeable of the work of the group.

Meetings are currently held on the third Monday of each month, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Mt.Dennis Legion Branch, 1050 Weston Rd.
The meetings usually last 2-21/2 hours. Financial Statements and a Project Coordinators report are reviewed each month. New initiatives and current undertakings are also reviewed. Periodic guest attend the BCCP meetings and occasionally the Meeting is held in conjunction with another event. A summer time picnic and a Christmas party are also hosted by the Directors.
